## Overview

The Cold Wallet ERS Backup Download feature offers users a secure method for creating and maintaining backup copies of their Emergency Recovery System. This process ensures that users can safeguard against the total loss of cryptocurrency stored in cold wallets.

> ### Note:
>
> - To use the Cold Wallet ERS Backup Download feature, ensure your cold wallet is paired with a hot wallet. To pair the wallets, please follow the steps [here](https://vault.docs.blockdaemon.com/docs/backup-master-key).
> - The key Backup process has to be done right after the master key of the cold side is generated.
> - If you use two nodes for the cold wallet configuration, both nodes must participate in this key backup process.

## How to Backup Master Key in Cold Wallet

To backup the master key in a cold wallet, follow the steps below:

1. Navigate to your cold wallet that has been paired with a hot wallet.
2. Select the **Settings** menu on the main navigation bar.

3. Click the **Backup Key** button on the top-right of your screen.

4. Your browser will download the backup key in **.JSON** format.
